On Monday, the Arizona Legislature passed the most robust school recess mandate in the country. The law sets an equitable 2-recess/day minimum standard for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade, marking a reversal of unhealthy practices that developed around high stakes testing and No Child Left Behind, in favor of a return to educating the whole child. Thursday, affirming his commitment to promoting student physical activity and school wellness, Governor Doug Ducey signed Senate Bill 1083. Arizonans for Recess is proud to have partnered with Healthy Future US, Arizona Health and Physical Education, and Arizona State PTA in this pivotal effort and is very grateful to our state leadership at the Legislature and the Governor’s Office for this significant improvement in the lives of Arizona’s youngest students. Arizona Health and Physical Education would like to especially thank Christine Davis from Arizonans for Recess for her leadership and making sure that Arizona students come first.
